Client Overview: Increasing Nonprofit Fundraising Capacity

Adam Red helped Detroit Has Heart, a Detroit-based nonprofit founded to honor the legacy of Detroit Lions NFL Football Hall of Famer, Charlie Sanders, by increasing nonprofit fundraising capacity.

Adam Red was invited to support the organization ahead of its first major fundraising event in several years, with the immediate goal of helping the team prepare for an annual fundraiser. However, it quickly became clear that the organization’s limited fundraising results were not an event problem—they were a brand capacity problem.

Adam Red was engaged to help increase nonprofit fundraising capacity by elevating the organization’s brand stature, clarifying its identity, and designing a community-centered fundraising strategy aligned with its legacy.

The Challenge: Increasing Nonprofit Fundraising Capacity Without Brand Clarity

Despite a meaningful mission and a powerful legacy, the organization faced several constraints that limited its ability to raise funds:

  • The previous name, Family 2 Family, was shared by multiple unrelated charities nationwide, causing confusion and diluting credibility

  • The brand lacked a clear public identity tied to Detroit, legacy, and impact

  • Prior fundraising efforts generated only modest results, signaling a trust and visibility gap

  • The organization needed to reintroduce itself to the community in a way that honored legacy while inspiring participation

The core challenge was clear: increasing nonprofit fundraising capacity required first increasing brand clarity, trust, and recognition.

The Strategic Approach: Increasing Nonprofit Fundraising Capacity Through Rebranding

Adam Red recommended a strategic shift before any event planning began.

The first move was a brand elevation decision: consolidating the organization’s identity under the name Detroit Has Heart, a name already associated with its mission and better aligned with its vision, geography, and legacy.

From there, Adam Red focused on increasing nonprofit fundraising capacity by:

  • Clarifying the organization’s story and public-facing identity

  • Aligning the brand with the stature and responsibility of the founder’s legacy

  • Establishing narrative consistency to build trust with donors and community supporters

  • Designing a grassroots fundraising protocol that empowered supporters to participate well beyond a single fundraising event

This approach reframed fundraising as a community-driven effort beyond the fundraiser.

What Was Built

To support increasing nonprofit fundraising capacity, Adam Red delivered:

  • A redefined brand identity centered on Detroit Has Heart

  • Clear messaging that connected legacy, place, and purpose

  • A Team 15 grassroots fundraising campaign, designed to activate community ambassadors as fundraisers

  • Strategic guidance for the organization’s annual fundraising event, grounded in participation rather than passive giving

  • Planning and coordination of the organization’s largest and most effective annual fundraiser at Detroit’s iconoic Rencen

The Team 15 model provided a repeatable framework that supporters could rally around, expanding the organization’s reach beyond its immediate circle.

Results: Increasing Nonprofit Fundraising Capacity in Practice

The rebrand and grassroots fundraising strategy resulted in a dramatic increase in fundraising capacity compared to previous years.

Rather than incremental gains, the organization experienced a multi-fold increase over prior fundraising efforts—demonstrating that when brand clarity and community engagement are aligned, fundraising performance follows.

Just as importantly, the organization emerged with:

  • A recognizable, credible brand identity

  • A clearer understanding of how to mobilize supporters

  • A fundraising model that could be repeated and scaled

The work positioned Detroit Has Heart to move forward with greater confidence, even as external circumstances later influenced the pace of growth.

After being assigned the legendary Charlie Sanders’ 88, TJ Hockenson agreed to serve as the spokesperson for the Team 15 campaign.

Closing Reflection

Detroit Has Heart illustrates a critical truth for impact leaders: fundraising capacity is inseparable from brand clarity.

By addressing identity, narrative, and community engagement first, Adam Red helped increase nonprofit fundraising capacity in a way that honored legacy, empowered supporters, and created a stronger foundation for future growth.
